CHINA: THE STREET STYLE WONDERLAND

Liz Nehdi

Shanghai street corner courtesy of Selena Schleh

Tonight, fashion elite and celebrities of all stripes will preen for the cameras at the stairs of the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, where they will make their entrance into this year's Met Gala, arguably the fashion world's most high-profile event. This year's theme is "China: Through the Looking Glass," and the dress code for the evening encourages attendees to be inspired by Chinese prints and dress. An exhibit of the same name will be on display from May 7th through August 16th and focuses on the history of Chinese fashion and art and its influence on western countries. It all peaked our curiosity as to what was happening now within China's major cities, on the street level.

Pulling from the street scenes of Beijing, Shanghai, Hong Kong, and other locales, we have compiled a collage of street fashion as eclectic as it is refreshing in order to provide a glimpse into what is currently fashionable across the country. For more street looks, visit our Pinterest board.

Mad Metallics

Metallics Collage by Liz Nehdi, 2014

I’m headed to California in a few days and the packing has begun. We’ll probably have at least one glitzy night out in LA, so I’ve got metallics on the brain. I’m currently loving the insouciance of pairing something glittery and glam with something casual and sporty, like the t-shirt and sequined trousers combo in the upper left of the collage. How do you take your metallics?

Mixed media work on paper by Liz Nehdi

Here's a favourite from my personal collection. I created this mixed media work on paper about 10 years ago. To make it, I combined the gravure sur carton printmaking method with layers of watercolour, gouache, pen and pencil. It's part of my series of dreamscapes in which I combine layers of seemingly unrelated imagery - both representational and abstract - to create dreamlike scenes.

The original isn't for sale, but high quality reproductions and products featuring this design are available in my online shop.
